Southampton manager Will Still has explained why Super Eagles midfielder Joe Aribo has been absent from the team this season, stressing that the player must work harder in training to earn his place.

Aribo, who missed most of pre-season, has yet to feature for the Saints in the ongoing Championship campaign.

Speaking to the Daily Echo, Still admitted that competition for places is intense, making it difficult to accommodate every player.

“We’ve got 25 players in the squad, including three goalkeepers, and every week six have to miss out, which is massive. Joe missed almost an entire pre-season, so we’re just easing him back in when the opportunity is right,” Still said.

He added: “There are a lot of players in his position right now, and honestly, the part I hate most in football is leaving people out. Sometimes there isn’t even a big reasonit’s just a decision I have to make. Players need to be patient, read the situation, and wait for their chance.

“I’d rather be upfront about it. With results and performances going well, the next game is always an opportunity for someone else. If Joe gets his, then so be it.”
