A tragic incident unfolded during a second-tier league football match in South Africa, as professional footballer Sinamandla Zondi collapsed on the field and later passed away.
Zondi, who played for Durban City FC, reportedly collapsed during a Motsepe Foundation Championship fixture against Milford FC at Chatsworth Stadium. Emergency services rushed him to a nearby hospital, but he sadly did not survive.
The match, which saw Milford FC leading 1-0 at halftime, was suspended following the incident. Durban City later confirmed the heartbreaking news in an official statement, expressing their grief over the loss.
“It is with deep sadness that we confirm the passing of Sinamandla Zondi, aka Sgara, a beloved member of the Durban City family,” the club said. “Sinamandla was more than a talented footballer. He was a teammate, a friend, a brother, a son, and an inspiration to all who knew him.”
While the exact cause of Zondi’s collapse has not been disclosed, the Premier Soccer League is expected to release an official statement and announce a new date for the rescheduled match.
