The South African Minister of Sports, Gayton McKenzie, has declared that the country is prepared to host the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations if Morocco decides not to proceed with the tournament.
Morocco was initially awarded the hosting rights for the 2026 edition of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), but reports indicate that the North African nation has requested a postponement due to logistical challenges.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) is yet to communicate an official decision on the matter.
Reacting to the uncertainty surrounding the competition, McKenzie expressed concern over the situation and affirmed South Africa’s readiness to step in if necessary.
“The situation regarding the CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations is very concerning,” McKenzie said.
“If Morocco is ready to host WAFCON, they should do so. But if they’re not ready, we are ready to do so. We have stadiums, we have the infrastructure, we are ready.
“If Morocco are not ready, we are ready to step in. We will not allow women to be treated in such a fashion.”
South Africa successfully hosted the 2010 FIFA World Cup and has continued to stage major continental and international sporting events, positioning itself as one of Africa’s leading destinations for global tournaments.
CAF is expected to make a decision on Morocco’s request in the coming days, with several member associations closely monitoring developments ahead of the 2026 showpiece.
