Brendan Rodgers says he expects Kelechi Iheanacho to become a key figure for Celtic after the striker’s late penalty sealed a thrilling 2-1 victory over Kilmarnock at Rugby Park.

With regular penalty taker Arne Engels already substituted, debutant Iheanacho stepped up and confidently converted from 12 yards, then sprinted to celebrate with the jubilant visiting fans.

Signed as a free agent following his release from Sevilla, the Nigeria international is looking to revive his career after difficult spells at Middlesbrough and in Spain. Rodgers, who previously worked with the forward at Leicester City, believes the 27-year-old can rediscover his best form at Parkhead.

“I was really pleased for Kels,” Rodgers said. “I think the last penalty he took for me was at Wembley, when we beat Man City in the Community Shield, and he put that one away too.

That’s a big moment for him, with the supporters and everything else. He’s got big moments in him, and once he gets fitter, he’s only going to get better.

Our regular taker was off the pitch. Benji [Nygren] wanted it, but I told the lads Kels should take it. I know the confidence he brings, and I also know what a goal will do for him.

I’m delighted for him and for the team  it’s been a long couple of weeks, and this is a big win for us.”
