Pep Guardiola has been awarded an honorary degree by the University of Manchester, recognizing his exceptional contributions to the city both on and off the pitch over the past nine years.
The award was presented by the University’s Chancellor, Nazir Afzal, during a ceremony held at Whitworth Hall.
In addition to his footballing achievements, the honor also acknowledges Guardiola’s impact beyond the sport—particularly through the work of his family’s charitable organization, the Guardiola Sala Foundation.
Since his arrival in 2016, Guardiola has overseen a historic era for Manchester City, including an unprecedented four consecutive Premier League titles and a historic Treble in 2023.
Reflecting on the recognition, Guardiola said:
“Manchester means so much to me. I’ve spent nine years here, and it truly feels like home. The people, the culture, my incredible football club, my colleagues—it’s all very special to me and my family. The way this city embraced me made everything easy. My time here has been beautiful.
“I understand how vital the University of Manchester is to this city. It’s a hub for research and innovation, with a proud legacy of discovery. To be honoured by such a respected institution is truly an amazing feeling.”
Professor Duncan Ivison, President and Vice-Chancellor of the University, praised Guardiola’s influence:
“Pep is both an innovator and a winner. His success as a manager has inspired millions, and he has played a significant part in cementing Manchester’s global reputation.”
