Super Eagles defender Bright Osayi-Samuel has opened up on the deep personal and professional impact of representing Nigeria, describing the national team as a place of unity, joy, and strong cultural connection.
Speaking on OmaSportsTV, the 28-year-old Fenerbahçe star revealed that his decision to commit to Nigeria was shaped by his upbringing and strong cultural influence from his parents, who immersed him in Nigerian traditions, food, and community life from a young age.
Osayi-Samuel explained that although many people believe playing for England offers more prestige, the emotional connection and team spirit he experiences with the Super Eagles is unmatched.
“Some people might think playing for England is better, but you don’t experience the other side of it. When it comes to how the team works together and the overall feeling, I don’t think you’d notice that kind of connection if you were playing for England,” he said.
The former Queens Park Rangers winger highlighted the positive atmosphere within the Nigerian camp, noting that the unity and joy among players set the Super Eagles apart.
“When you get to the Nigeria setup, that’s exactly how it is everyone is having fun. You never see any bad feelings; even the players who aren’t playing are smiling and excited about the game and training,” Osayi-Samuel added.
He also reflected on how his positional switch to right-back at Turkish giants Fenerbahçe played a key role in earning his first Super Eagles call-up, admitting he initially struggled with the change before embracing it as an opportunity to fulfill his dream of playing for Nigeria.
“When I got the call asking if I wanted to play as a right-back, I was really excited.
That’s one of the main reasons I took the role seriously, because it was a chance for me to play right-back for both my club and my country. I’ve never looked back,” he said.
Osayi-Samuel further revealed that his long-standing desire to represent Nigeria was driven by family pride and the strong support he receives from relatives and well-wishers back home, especially during major tournaments like the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
“Tournaments like AFCON are a way for me to give something back to them. Even after the tournament, the love and messages I’ve gotten from people back home have been really amazing,” he stated.
The Super Eagles defender also noted that playing for Nigeria has helped him build new relationships and connections, which he says has enriched his life beyond football.
“I’ve begun meeting new people because of this tournament, and that’s something I really enjoy and love. This is one of the reasons I will always want to play for Nigeria,” Osayi-Samuel concluded.
Osayi-Samuel has earned 32 caps for the Super Eagles since making his debut in a high-profile international friendly against Portugal, and remains a key figure in Nigeria’s national team setup.
