Basketball icon LeBron James will carry the American flag during the opening ceremony in Paris on Friday .
The 39-year-old Los Angeles Lakers player , who is competing in his fourth Olympic Games, was chosen in a vote among American Olympic athletes.
“As a kid from Akron, this responsibility means everything to not only me, but to my family, all the kids in my hometown, my teammates, fellow Olympians and so many people across the country with big aspirations.
Sports has the power to bring us all together, and I’m proud to be a part of this momentous occasion,” James said.
James helped America win gold at the 2008 and 2012 Olympics. In 2004, he won bronze with his country as a 19-year-old.
James is a 20-time NBA All-Star, became the NBA’s all-time scorer in 2023, holds four NBA titles, and has been honored as NBA MVP four times.
