Brazilian soccer legend Marta was unable to end her impressive career with Olympic gold on Saturday.

The United States women’s soccer team won the final against the Brazilians 0-1.

Mallory Swanson scored the only goal of the match after almost an hour of play. The 26-year-old striker did so in what was precisely her hundredth international match, Marta came on the pitch shortly after.

The 38-year-old striker made her first minutes after a suspension for a red card in the group match against Spain, where she kicked an opponent in the head, and was subsequently suspended for two matches.

For Marta it was her last match in her beautiful career, in which she was named World Footballer of the Year six times.

With Brazil she came second once at a World Cup and won silver three times at the Olympic Games (2004, 2008 and 2024).

It was the fifth Olympic title in total for the United States women’s soccer team and the first since 2012.

This happened under Emma Hayes, who has been the national coach of the American women’s soccer team since this summer.
