As part of the state government commitment towards rewarding excellence, Edo State Governor, Godwin Nogheghase Obaseki, has showered a hundred million naira on Edo Queens Football Club of Benin of Benin for emerging as the champions of the just concluded CAF Women’s Champions League WAFU-B qualifiers in far away Cote D’Ivoire.
Obviously excited with the performance of the Ancient City based ladies in Cote D’Ivoire, the sports loving governor gave this handsome reward to the team, during a Red Carpet reception held in honour of the victorious Queens at the government House Benin-City.
According to him: ” This is a season of joy for the good people of Edo State, you know we are in a celebration mood, because we are marking the 33 years of Edo State as one united people. Today Edo Queens is here to add to our happiness. In fact I don’t know what to say, than to say a big thank you to God that what we have been doing since we came on board is fast yielding good dividends.”
“When we came in 2016, nobody gave Edo women a chance, all we hear people talk about our girls is nothing but negative stories. When I saw it I told myself that we were going to change the narratives, and today, am happy with what the positive results we are getting in all sector of our economy.”
“This is not a speech making event, I have come here to say a big thank you to everyone that has made this mission possible. My darling Edo Queens, you don’t know what you have brought to me as your governor especially now that am getting ready to hand over to the incoming governor Dr. Asue Ighodalo. I don’t want to say much, but I want you all to go and conquer Africa as you have conquered West Africa. If you bring the CAF Champions League trophy to Edo State, I won’t tell you what I will do for you, but for doing this I give the entire team, supporting Staff and supporters club One hundred million naira.
