Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi has been placed in an induced coma following emergency abdominal surgery, talkSPORT has learned.
The 27-year-old sustained the injury during Forest’s 2-2 draw with Leicester City at the City Ground over the weekend, after colliding with the goalpost. Despite appearing in discomfort, Awoniyi completed the match.
Concerns grew when club medical staff detected complications, leading to his hospital admission on Monday evening.
On Tuesday, Forest issued a statement confirming that Awoniyi was “recovering well” from the operation. However, doctors have since opted to place him in an induced coma—a medically controlled measure to limit movement and stabilize his heart rate.
While his current condition is not considered life-threatening, the type of injury he suffered can be fatal in certain cases. It remains unclear whether additional surgery will be required.
“The seriousness of his injury is a powerful reminder of the physical risks in the game, and why a player’s health and well-being must always come first,” the club said in their statement.
