Nigeria has officially declared its interest in bidding to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Abuja, having met the deadline for submitting its expression of interest.

Following an executive committee meeting held on April 3, 2025, in Abuja, the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) confirmed it met the March 28, 2025 deadline to express interest in the bidding process.

However, the formal bid can only proceed with the endorsement and support of the Federal Government.

In a statement issued by Tony Nezianya, the NOC’s Public Relations Officer, the Committee emphasized that hosting the 2030 Games would offer Nigeria a unique opportunity to showcase its national development, elevate its global profile, and invigorate its sporting culture.

Nigeria last hosted a major multi-sport event in 2003 — the All Africa Games (COJA 2003), also held in Abuja. That successful experience demonstrated the country’s ability to organize large-scale international events, providing a strong foundation for its current ambition.

According to the NOC, bidding for the Games could trigger substantial investments in sports infrastructure, particularly in Abuja. This development would not only enhance facilities for future athletes but also stimulate the local sports economy.

Hosting the Games is expected to drive construction and upgrades in sports venues, transportation networks, and accommodation infrastructure. These improvements would yield long-term benefits for both the sporting community and the general public.

Tourism would also receive a significant boost, as international visitors flocking to the Games would support local businesses, create employment, and stimulate the hospitality sector.

Furthermore, the Games would inspire a new generation of Nigerian athletes by providing greater motivation and improved facilities to pursue sporting excellence. It would affirm Nigeria’s commitment to nurturing athletic talent and celebrating sporting achievement.

Beyond sports, hosting the Commonwealth Games could serve as a powerful catalyst for national unity, promoting peace and highlighting the country’s rich cultural diversity.

The next Commonwealth Games are scheduled to take place in Glasgow, Scotland, from March 17 to March 29, 2026.
