The Nigerian football community was thrown into mourning on Thursday evening following the death of former Super Eagles goalkeeper, Peter Rufai, in Lagos after a period of illness.
Rufai, who was Nigeria’s first-choice goalkeeper at the 1994 and 1998 FIFA World Cups, passed away to the shock and sadness of many.
“This is truly heartbreaking,” said Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, General Secretary of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), in Abuja. “Peter Rufai… gone? What happened? I’m in disbelief. We weren’t even aware he had been ill.”
“We sincerely pray that the Almighty grants him eternal rest and gives strength to his family, loved ones, and the entire Nigerian football family during this difficult time,” Sanusi added.
