Lionel Messi has been named the Major League Soccer (MLS) Most Valuable Player for the second consecutive year after delivering a sensational campaign with Inter Miami.
The Argentine superstar played a pivotal role in Inter Miami’s historic MLS title triumph, finishing as the league’s top scorer and chief creator. Messi scored 29 regular-season goals the fourth-highest tally in MLS history and registered 19 assists to claim the MLS Golden Boot.
With the honor, the 38-year-old became the first player to win the MLS MVP award in back-to-back seasons and only the second player in league history to win the award twice, joining Preki, who achieved the feat in 1997 and 2003.
Messi’s remarkable season also saw him become just the second player in MLS history to lead the league in both goals and assists in a single campaign, emulating Toronto FC legend Sebastian Giovinco’s achievement in 2015.
The former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain forward, who guided Argentina to the 2022 FIFA World Cup title, signed a three-year contract extension with Inter Miami in October, underlining his long-term commitment to the club and to MLS.
