Kenya and Ethiopia athletes dominate the 2025 Lagos City Marathon

Kenyan athlete Edwin Kibet claimed victory in the men’s category of the 2025 Lagos City Marathon, held on Saturday.

Koech secured the $50,000 first-place prize, marking his second win after triumphing in the 2023 edition. He completed the race in a record time of 2 hours and 14 minutes.

In the women’s category, Ethiopia’s Guta Hirpa emerged as the winner with a time of 2 hours, 37 minutes, and 2 seconds. This victory marked her third win in the women’s event of the marathon.

The first Nigerian to finish the race, Nyango Boyi, made history by securing a spot in the top 10. He completed the marathon in 8th place, with a time of 2:25:41.58, earning a $4,000 prize. As the top Nigerian finisher, Boyi also took home the N2 million award for the Nigerian category.

Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu was among the participants in this year’s marathon, which saw around 37,000 runners compete in both the 10km and 42km races.
