Japanese Boxer Shigetoshi Kotari dies from brain injury after title fight

Japanese boxer Shigetoshi Kotari has died at the age of 28, just six days after sustaining severe injuries in a title bout against Yamato Hata.

The fight, held on August 2, ended tragically for Kotari, who was rushed to the hospital and underwent emergency surgery for a subdural hematoma. The procedure a craniotomy automatically enforces retirement under Japan’s boxing regulations.

Two days after the surgery, the Japan Boxing Commission confirmed he was under close observation. However, nearly a week later, the commission announced on social media that Kotari had passed away.

“Rest in peace, Shigetoshi Kotari,” the statement read. “The boxing world mourns the tragic loss of a talented Japanese fighter, who sustained his fatal injuries during the August 2nd title fight.

“A warrior in the ring. A fighter in spirit. Gone too soon. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, team, and the entire Japanese boxing community.”
