Paul Onuachu, the Nigerian striker for Southampton, has shared his joy after scoring his first goal for the club in their match against Nottingham Forest.

Since joining the team at Saint Mary’s, Onuachu had struggled to find the back of the net, but he ended his goal drought on Sunday. While he was pleased to score, he admitted it was bittersweet given the team’s loss.

“It’s a great feeling to score, but it’s disappointing that we lost,” Onuachu said, as quoted by Southampton’s official website. “I’m happy to score in front of the fans, especially the away fans. They’ve been amazing and supportive, even though we’re at the bottom of the table. They’ve cheered me on to get this first goal, and I’m really grateful to them for that.”

He continued, “They’ve been fantastic. Even though we’re at the bottom, they’ve traveled everywhere and been fully behind us. I’m dedicating this goal to them because they’ve been so supportive, cheering me on even when I’ve had good or not-so-good games. It’s really nice to see.”

Reflecting on his role in the game, Onuachu shared, “When I came on, the coach just told me, ‘Paul, go out, fight, and try to keep the ball,’ so I did what he asked. The whole team showed a lot of energy in the second half, and Lesley was outstanding again. It’s disappointing to lose, but as a striker, scoring that first goal for Saints gives me confidence, and I think the fans will be happy for me.”

So far this season, Onuachu has played 11 league matches, scored one goal, and is still looking for his first assist.
