World football governing body FIFA has released its latest world rankings, with Spain climbing to the summit after dethroning reigning world champions Argentina.

The update, published on Thursday, sees the European champions rewarded for an impressive run of results over recent months. Spain’s consistency in competitive fixtures and friendlies pushed them above Argentina, who slipped to second place after holding the No.1 position since their 2022 World Cup triumph in Qatar.

France maintained their strong form to remain in third, while England and Brazil completed the top five.

Meanwhile, Nigeria’s Super Eagles suffered a setback despite collecting four points in the last international window. José Peseiro’s men dropped one place to 45th in the world and are now ranked sixth in Africa, behind Morocco, Senegal, Egypt, Tunisia, and Algeria.

The latest figures highlight the growing competition on the continent, with several African teams making steady progress ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
