Amaju Melvin Pinnick, former president of the Nigeria Football Federation, has maintained his optimism despite strong opposition from Zambia Football Federation President Andrew Kamanga.
The recent endorsements from CECAFA and COSAFA for Kamanga have intensified the race, but Pinnick remains confident in his prospects of returning to the FIFA council.
“We’ve seen this before, and we’re pleased with the unions’ statements,” Pinnick said.
“But one thing I know for sure is that I have friends across Africa, and this election isn’t just between Amaju and Andrew Kamanga. No, Amaju is running against nine candidates, and Kamanga is running against nine as well.”
“As in athletics, the first five to cross the line win the race. It’s not me versus Kamanga; he’s my friend and a fantastic guy who has helped elevate Zambian football. We’ve worked together many times, and honestly, I’d be shocked if Kamanga doesn’t vote for me.”
“Many of us have friends in COSAFA, CECAFA, WAFU A, WAFU B, and North Africa. I must emphasize that all 10 candidates are highly qualified, and it’s their right to run for the position. It’s a natural part of the process, and we can persuade them to allow us to continue. Ultimately, power rests with God, and this is not a do-or-die situation.”
“What’s important is that everyone is focused on advancing African football. It’s unfortunate when some try to stir bitterness.”
Pinnick also addressed claims that only presidents can be part of the FIFA council, calling it “unfortunate” and a move to stir political tension.
“At the right time, we will respond to that. But I want to emphasize that all candidates are exceptionally qualified for the role.”
“They are successful in their businesses and have transferred that success to football. These are the types of individuals whose experience cannot be overlooked,” he concluded.
