FIFA has announced a significant adjustment to the international football calendar, beginning in 2026.

The governing body confirmed that the traditional September and October international breaks will be merged into one extended window.

The new format will give national teams a single, longer period to play their matches, instead of breaking the season twice in quick succession. Under the revised schedule, teams will be allowed to play up to four fixtures during this international window.

For 2026, the consolidated break has been scheduled for 21 September to 6 October, giving players more time to recover and travel, while providing clubs with a longer uninterrupted run of domestic fixtures before and after the international period.

The change is part of FIFA’s broader effort to optimize the global match calendar, reduce player fatigue from excessive travel, and strike a balance between club and international football commitments.

This new arrangement will be closely watched by clubs, national associations, and fans worldwide, as it is expected to have a major impact on fixture planning, player workload management, and the overall rhythm of the football season.
