Nigeria’s Super Eagles have suffered a setback ahead of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, as Werder Bremen defender Felix Agu has been ruled out of the tournament due to injury.
Agu sustained a syndesmosis ligament injury in Bremen’s 1-0 victory over St. Pauli last month. The versatile full-back later underwent surgery and was initially projected to return within two months.
However, Werder Bremen’s head of professional football, Peter Niemeyer, has confirmed that the 24-year-old will not be fit until next year.
“His return will definitely not take place until the new year,” Niemeyer told DeichStube.
Agu, who previously represented Germany at youth level before pledging his international future to Nigeria, will now miss the chance to feature in his first AFCON tournament.
