Southampton have officially become the first team to be relegated from the Premier League this season following a 3-1 loss to Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.
The Saints needed a win or at least a draw, combined with a Wolves slip-up against Ipswich, to keep their survival hopes alive. However, Jorgen Strand Larsen’s late goal for Ipswich at Portman Road on Saturday dealt a heavy blow, and Sunday’s defeat in north London sealed their fate.
With just 10 points from 31 matches and a goal difference of -51, Southampton now hold the joint-lowest points total at this stage in Premier League history. They’ve managed only two wins and four draws all season, becoming the quickest team to be relegated to the Championship.
