The Super Eagles of Nigeria were defeated 2–1 by Egypt in a pre-2025 Africa Cup of Nations international friendly at the Cairo International Stadium on Tuesday night.

Nigeria head coach Eric Chelle named a largely experimental squad for the encounter as part of preparations for the upcoming AFCON tournament in Morocco.

The Pharaohs opened the scoring in the 28th minute when Mahmoud Saber found the back of the net to give the hosts the advantage.

The Super Eagles responded before the break, drawing level late in the first half. Defender Chidozie Awaziem rose highest to nod home a Zaidu Sanusi free kick after Egypt failed to properly clear their lines.

Egypt, however, regained control shortly after the restart, with Mostafa Mohamed restoring the hosts’ lead early in the second half to seal the win.

Despite the defeat, the friendly provided valuable assessment opportunities for the Nigerian coaching crew ahead of the continental showpiece. The Super Eagles are scheduled to depart for Fez, Morocco, on Thursday to continue their final preparations for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
