Crystal Palace triumphed over Liverpool in this season’s Community Shield, clinching victory via penalties in a thrilling encounter at Wembley on Sunday.
Liverpool struck first inside four minutes, with debutant Hugo Ekitike marking his debut in style. The Eagles responded swiftly when Ismaila Sarr was brought down in the box, and Jean-Philippe Mateta calmly converted from the spot to level the score.
The Reds regained the lead almost immediately as Jeremie Frimpong’s cross looped over goalkeeper Dean Henderson and into the net.
With time running out, Sarr broke through Liverpool’s defence to net his second of the match, making it 2-2 and forcing a penalty shootout.
Henderson emerged the hero in the shootout, pulling off a string of brilliant saves to seal the win, adding the Community Shield to Palace’s FA Cup triumph earlier this year.
