Super Eagles head coach, Eric Chelle, has revealed why key players like Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman were left out of the squad for this year’s Unity Cup.
Chelle stated that the decision was made to provide opportunities for emerging talents and to broaden the pool of players ahead of future competitions.
Nigeria is set to face archrivals Ghana on May 28 in the opening match of the tournament.
The squad includes 10 players from the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), with veteran forward Ahmed Musa also earning a recall.
“We have a lot of talent in Nigeria, and it’s important to give some of these players a chance to prove themselves,” Chelle told NFF Media. “We’re working on building a strong identity as a team, and that involves bringing in players who can learn quickly and adapt.”
He added, “The Unity Cup is a perfect opportunity to test out new players and systems as we prepare for more competitive fixtures in September.”
