Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle has issued an apology to DR Congo following a heated altercation that occurred after Nigeria’s defeat in the 2026 World Cup playoffs.
Chelle, who was visibly emotional at the end of the match, explained that his reaction was triggered by a confrontation with a member of the Congolese technical staff who attempted to enter Nigeria’s technical area during the game.
“Football is about emotions. After the match, I reacted impulsively because of an altercation with a member of the DR Congo staff who tried to enter my technical area. I never intended to target the Congolese people nor their staff, whom I respect.”
The coach went on to praise his team despite their elimination, and congratulated DR Congo for what he described as a deserved victory.
“I am disappointed by our elimination, but proud of my players. Congratulations to Congo, who were better. Their fans showed great passion, just like ours. We move forward together for what comes next.”
Chelle also used the opportunity to address social media impersonation, stressing that he has no official Twitter account.
“I also want to clarify that any Twitter account under my name is fake.”
