Nigeria’s preparations for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) have suffered a major setback, with seven players ruled out of contention ahead of the tournament.
The CHAN competition is exclusive to players plying their trade in their respective domestic leagues. However, five Super Eagles players—Abubakar Sadiq, Philip Adejo, Saviour Isaac, Papa Daniels Mustapha, and Waliu Ojetoye—have become ineligible after securing moves abroad. While the details of their transfers remain undisclosed, their exit from the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) disqualifies them from participating.
Adding to the blow, Rangers defender Ifeanyi Onyebuchi has been ruled out due to injury and will not report to the CHAN camp.
Also unavailable is Sporting Lagos goalkeeper Ifeanyi Harcourt, who is currently on duty with Nigeria’s U20 national team.
These absences are expected to prompt a significant reshuffle in Coach Eric Chelle’s squad selection as he works to build a competitive team for the continental championship.
