Celtic manager Martin O’Neill has explained why Nigerian forward Kelechi Iheanacho has struggled to secure regular playing time at the Scottish champions this season.

The Super Eagles striker joined Celtic F.C. last summer from Spanish side Sevilla FC but has found it difficult to establish himself in the team, largely due to fitness issues.

Speaking in an interview with the Daily Record, O’Neill admitted that Iheanacho has not featured much this season but praised the striker’s ability to lead the line.

“I don’t think he has played that much this season, to be honest. But he has good ability to hold up play,” the 74-year-old said.

The former Northern Ireland international manager also stressed that the major concern has been the player’s fitness level.

“It’s more about full fitness—that’s been a concern. I do feel for him because my job is not to please everyone at the club,” he added.

O’Neill further explained that competition within the squad has also limited Iheanacho’s chances in the team.

“To be fair, I don’t think he’s had a proper opportunity, but at this moment, there are others who may be better suited to the demands of the league.

It might have been different if he had a full pre-season,” the Northern Irishman stated.
