Rivers United suffered a heartbreaking 2-1 defeat to Moroccan giants RS Berkane in their CAF Champions League matchday two fixture on Friday night at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo.

The defeat marks the second consecutive group-stage loss for the Pride of Rivers, who had hoped to bounce back in front of their fans after their opening-day setback.

The hosts took the lead eight minutes before halftime when Berkane midfielder Mamadou Camara mistakenly directed the ball into his own net while attempting to clear a cross, giving Rivers United a deserved 1-0 advantage heading into the break.

Stanley Eguma’s men held on firmly and looked set to claim all three points until late drama unfolded deep into stoppage time. Youness El Kaabi drew the visitors level with a close-range finish in the seventh minute of added time, silencing the home crowd.

Barely a minute later, substitute Mounir Chouiar completed the stunning comeback, firing past the Rivers United goalkeeper to seal a remarkable turnaround for the Moroccan side.

The result leaves Rivers United in a difficult position in the group standings as they now shift focus to their next fixture against Zambia’s Power Dynamos scheduled for January 23, 2026.

The Nigerian club will be desperate to secure their first group-stage win to revive their qualification hopes.
