Nigeria’s Rivers United have sealed their place in the group stage of the CAF Champions League after a dramatic 3-1 victory over Black Bulls of Mozambique on Saturday, overturning a first-leg deficit to advance 3-2 on aggregate.

After losing 1-0 in Maputo last week, the Pride of Rivers needed a two-goal win in Port Harcourt and they rose to the occasion in front of their home supporters.

Wasiu Falolu opened the scoring early in the first half to calm the nerves of the hosts, before Macklyn Biokpo doubled the lead from the penalty spot to give Rivers United a 2-0 advantage.

The visitors briefly threatened a comeback by pulling one back to make it 2-1, but Zechariah Timothy restored the cushion with a fine strike in the 80th minute to seal the result and confirm Rivers United’s passage to the group stage of Africa’s elite club competition.

With the win, Rivers United join the continent’s best teams in the next round, as they continue their quest for CAF Champions League glory.
