The President of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Patrice Motsepe, has officially confirmed plans to launch an African Nations League, a new continental competition aimed at restructuring and revitalising national team football across the continent.
Motsepe announced that the tournament will feature all African national teams and will be organised along geographical lines to enhance competitiveness and regional balance.
According to the proposal, teams will be divided into four distinct zones:
North Africa
East Africa
West Africa
Central and Southern Africa
Each zone will stage its own regional phase, with countries competing against one another within their respective regions.
The winners from each zone will then progress to a continental final phase, where they will battle for the title of African Nations League champions.
The introduction of the competition is expected to provide more structured fixtures for national teams, increase competitive matches across the calendar, and strengthen football development within each region.
Further details regarding the format, scheduling, and qualification structure are expected to be released by CAF in due course.
