Brighton & Hove Albion have confirmed that a 72-year-old male supporter sadly passed away following their Premier League opener against Fulham.
The supporter became unwell in the East Stand Upper during the second half of the match. Despite immediate attention from emergency services and club medical staff, efforts to revive him were unsuccessful.
The club revealed that its safety team, in consultation with Sussex Police and the Premier League, considered suspending the game. However, as the majority of fans and players were unaware of the incident, it was decided not to halt play.
Officials explained that stopping the match could have drawn unnecessary attention to the situation, potentially affecting the resuscitation attempts and complicating matters further if the supporter had responded and required urgent hospital transfer.
