Angola has been confirmed as the host nation for the entire 2026 Basketball Africa League (BAL) season following approval from President João Lourenço.

The decision marks another significant milestone for Angolan basketball, with the country increasingly positioning itself as a major hub for the sport on the continent.

Angola are the reigning African champions, having secured a record-extending 12th AfroBasket title after a dominant 70–43 victory over Mali in the final of AfroBasket 2025.

With the hosting rights for BAL Season 6, Angola will welcome Africa’s elite club teams across all phases of the competition, further strengthening its reputation as a nerve centre of continental basketball.

Meanwhile, the NBA has announced major structural changes to the BAL, confirming that the league will evolve into a permanent 12-team competition beginning from the upcoming cycle.

According to the NBA, the revamped format will include an estimated entry fee of $50 million, underlining the league’s growing commercial value and long-term sustainability.

Since its launch in 2021, the Basketball Africa League has made a significant economic impact, contributing more than $250 million to Africa’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP), while also creating employment opportunities and boosting sports development across the continent.

Angola’s hosting of BAL 2026 is expected to further accelerate basketball growth in Africa, both on and off the court, as the league continues its expansion and consolidation as a premier global basketball product.
