The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially dismissed reports suggesting that foreign referees would be drafted for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.

CAF had earlier considered the idea in July as part of discussions aimed at improving officiating standards across the continent. However, the proposal was formally shelved on Tuesday afternoon following internal consultations.

Instead, the football governing body has opted to maintain confidence in African match officials, confirming that referees drawn from within the continent will officiate matches during the biennial tournament.

The decision has been welcomed by several stakeholders, who believe it will help promote the development and exposure of African referees on the biggest stage of continental football.

The 2025 AFCON will be staged in Morocco and is expected to feature the best national teams across Africa in what promises to be a highly competitive tournament.
