Nigeria’s sprint hurdler Tobi Amusan produced another brilliant display on Monday night, racing to a silver medal in the women’s 100m hurdles final at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.

Amusan, the reigning African champion and former world record holder, clocked an impressive 12.29 seconds in a fiercely contested race inside the packed Tokyo Olympic Stadium.

Switzerland’s Ditaji Kambundji stole the headlines, powering to gold in a blistering 12.24 seconds, a new Swiss national record. The 23-year-old maintained her form through the barriers and edged Amusan over the final hurdle to secure her first-ever world title.

American star Grace Stark claimed the bronze medal, crossing the line in 12.34 seconds, while her compatriot Masai Russell narrowly missed the podium, finishing fourth in 12.44 seconds.

The race lived up to its billing as one of the most competitive events of the Championships, featuring six women who had run under 12.50 this season. Amusan, who came into Tokyo as one of the favourites, showed composure from the gun and was in contention for gold until the final metres.

The silver adds to Amusan’s growing list of honours, including her gold medal at the 2022 World Championships in Eugene and multiple Diamond League titles. Her podium finish in Tokyo also means Nigeria continues its strong tradition in sprint hurdles on the global stage.

With this performance, Amusan remains one of the world’s most consistent hurdlers, and she will now shift focus to next year’s major competitions as she aims to reclaim the world title and prepare for the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games.
