The Super Eagles of Nigeria revived their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign on Saturday after edging Rwanda 1-0 at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, Uyo.

The three-time African champions went into the encounter under pressure, knowing anything short of victory could further complicate their chances of making it to the tournament in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Rwanda, however, arrived with a clear game plan: frustrate the hosts and capitalize on counter-attacks.

The first half was a cagey affair, with Nigeria struggling to break down the compact Amavubi defence. The home crowd was dealt a major blow when talismanic striker Victor Osimhen limped off injured midway through the opening half, forcing coach Eric Chelle into an early change that disrupted Nigeria’s attacking rhythm.

After the restart, the introduction of Gent striker Tolu Arokodare provided fresh energy and urgency to the Eagles’ frontline. His physical presence unsettled the Rwandan defenders, and in the 68th minute, he made the difference. Rising highest to meet a cross, Arokodare powered home a header that sent the packed Uyo stadium into wild celebrations.

Rwanda pushed for a late equalizer, but the Nigerian backline, marshaled by Calvin Bassey and Semi Ajayi, stood firm to protect the slim lead until the final whistle.

The victory not only restored hope but also lifted morale in the Nigerian camp ahead of a crunch clash against South Africa in Johannesburg  a fixture that could prove decisive in the qualification race.

With Osimhen’s fitness now a concern, much will rest on the shoulders of Arokodare and his teammates as the Super Eagles fight to secure their place at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
