Sudan head coach Kwesi Appiah has set the record straight after his comments on Nigeria’s performance at the 2025 African Nations Championship were widely misinterpreted.
Appiah guided Sudan to a resounding 4-0 victory over the Super Eagles in Zanzibar, a result that kept his side top of the group with four points from two matches. However, the post-match narrative shifted after reports suggested he had called for Nigeria to change their coach.
Speaking after Sudan’s training session ahead of their final group clash with Senegal on Tuesday, Appiah expressed disappointment over how his words were reported.
“That’s the problem I have with the media. When you ask a question and a follow-up, you should report everything in context. You don’t just pick a part of it and use it that’s not fair to us coaches,” he told RG.
Appiah clarified that his actual remarks were an assessment of Nigeria’s squad balance rather than a criticism of their coach.
“The question was about how I see the Nigerian team, and I said they have a very good team the defence is solid, the midfield is fantastic—but up front, they sometimes struggle to score,” he explained.
“They then asked how that problem can be solved, and I replied that if your defence and midfield are strong, it becomes a matter of the coach finding ways to ensure the team can finish attacks better.”
The former Ghana coach stressed that his words were never intended as a call for Nigeria to replace their coach, but simply an honest tactical observation.
