Italian world number 1 Jannik Sinner has withdrawn from the Paris Olympic tennis tournament.

The Australian Open winner says he has been feeling ill in recent days and was diagnosed with tonsillitis.

“Missing the Games is a huge disappointment as this was one of my main goals for this season. I was looking forward to having the honor of representing my country at this big event,” the 22-year-old Sinner wrote on Instagram.

The Italian replaced Novak Djokovic as world number 1 at the beginning of last month. In doing so, he became the first Italian ever to top the list.

At the beginning of this year, Sinner won his first Grand Slam title at the Australian Open.
