Javier Aguirre is set to return to the Mexican national team as coach.

The 65-year-old coach has been appointed as the successor to Jaime Lozano , who was sacked last week after the team’s early exit from the Copa América.

Aguirre survived the group stage with Mexico at both the 2002 and 2010 World Cups, only to be eliminated in the round of 16 in both cases.

Under Aguirre’s leadership, Mexico played 61 international matches, winning 38 and losing 12.

Rafael Márquez , a 147-time Mexico international and former AS Monaco and FC Barcelona defender, has been appointed as Aguirre’s main assistant.
Mexico will host the 2026 World Cup in two years, together with the United States and Canada
