Super Falcons goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie has expressed her excitement following Nigeria’s impressive start to the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) with a convincing win over Tunisia on Sunday.

Goals from Asisat Oshoala, Rinsola Babajide, and substitute Chiwendu Ihezuo secured the Super Falcons’ first victory of the tournament, extending their dominance over North African opponents.

Speaking after the match, Nnadozie praised the team’s performance but stressed the need for constant focus.

“I feel so good; it was a great performance and a perfect start for us,” Nnadozie said. “The Tunisians are not a bad side. We respect them a lot, they played really well, but today (Sunday) belonged to us. We hope to keep building on this momentum.”

The Paris FC shot-stopper also emphasised the importance of staying alert, even in games where the opposition creates few chances.

“There wasn’t much to do for me at the back, but as a goalkeeper, it’s always important to stay concentrated — you never know when danger will come,” she added.

Sunday’s match marked the third time the nine-time African champions have faced a North African side in their opening WAFCON fixture. The previous encounters saw Nigeria defeat Morocco 8-0 in 1998 and Algeria 4-0 in 2004.

The Super Falcons will now aim to build on their winning start as they continue their quest for a 10th continental title.
