A tragic stampede during celebrations by Algerian football champions Mouloudia Club d’Alger (MCA) has left three people dead and 81 others injured, authorities confirmed on Sunday.
The incident occurred at the Stade du 5 Juillet in Algiers on Saturday, where MCA fans gathered to mark their club’s ninth league title and second consecutive championship. Initial reports indicated one fatality and 11 injuries, but the health ministry later confirmed a higher toll.
“Three deaths have been recorded,” the ministry announced, adding that 81 injured individuals were treated at various hospitals in the capital.
According to La Gazette du Fennec, the chaos began when a security barrier gave way, causing fans in the upper stands to fall onto spectators below.
The stadium was filled to capacity for MCA’s final league match, which ended in a goalless draw against NC Magra. In light of the tragedy, the national football league canceled the planned official trophy presentation ceremony.
