Team Nigeria delivered an outstanding performance at the African Para Grand Prix in Tunisia, racking up a total of 19 medals—10 gold, 6 silver, and 3 bronze.

The President of the Para-Olympics Committee of Nigeria (PCN), Sunday Odebode, praised the athletes and attributed their success to the unwavering support from the National Sports Commission (NSC).

He highlighted that Nigeria finished second overall among 42 participating nations, describing the achievement as a testament to strategic investment in para-sports.

“The NSC, under the leadership of Chairman Mallam Shehu Dikko and Director General Hon. Bukola Olopade, has transformed the landscape for people living with disabilities through robust financial and technical backing,” Odebode said.

“We’ve never experienced this level of support before. The Commission is not just funding our activities, but also ensuring we are technically prepared for both local and international competitions. The result in Tunisia speaks volumes—the athletes gave their all and made Nigeria proud.”

Odebode further revealed that the Grand Prix success has opened doors for Nigerian para-athletes, securing qualifications for the World Championship in India, as well as spots for the Commonwealth Games and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympic Games.

He also noted the Commission’s role in streamlining para-sport programs across the country. “The recent trials for Para-powerlifting led to the discovery of 10 new athletes, who are now set to compete at the World Tournament in Santiago, Chile. Our Para-athletes will soon open camp, and preparations are underway in Wheelchair Basketball and Para-swimming as well.”

“All of this has been made possible by the NSC’s renewed funding strategy and commitment to inclusion in sports,” Odebode concluded.
