The chairman of the Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL), Gbenga Elegbeleye, says the league’s referees rank among the best in the world.
Speaking during an interactive session with journalists while reviewing the 2024/25 NPFL season, Elegbeleye insisted their performance stands up against their counterparts globally.
“I’ve travelled around the world and witnessed some shocking officiating decisions — something you hardly see in the NPFL. That’s why I can confidently say our referees are among the best in the world,” he said.
He explained that the marked improvement in officiating is the result of training and a growing opportunity for Nigerian referees to handle continental games — further validating their competence.
He cited the last Confederation of African Football (CAF) U-20 Championship in Egypt, noting, “at the U-20 Championship in Egypt, a Nigerian referee was involved, and another has been shortlisted for the upcoming WAFCON. This shows clear progress.”
While acknowledging there’s room for further improvement, Elegbeleye stressed that continued training and support for referees is crucial for sustaining these gains.
He also called on the media to aid in highlighting the strong performances of match officials, while drawing attention to any irregularities that may undermine the league’s credibility.
