Nigeria and Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi has spoken out for the first time since suffering a serious injury during his side’s clash with Leicester City.

The forward collided with the goalpost last weekend and, despite finishing the match, his condition worsened within 24 hours. He was subsequently rushed to the hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery for a ruptured intestine. Awoniyi has since spent the past week receiving specialized medical treatment.

Reflecting on the ordeal, Awoniyi shared an emotional message:

“This season has been one of the most difficult of my career, but through it all, I have felt the love. By the grace of God, I am grateful to still be here, to still be fighting, smiling, and in good spirits.”

“To my teammates, coaches, staff, and the entire Forest family — thank you for your well wishes. Your visit to the hospital lifted my spirits more than words can say. I wish the boys all the best in the final two games — keep believing and pushing. I’m with you all the way and can’t wait to be back out there doing what I love.”

“To my family, friends, and fans — especially everyone back home in Nigeria — thank you for the prayers, support, and kind words. I feel them and carry them with me every day as I recover.”

Awoniyi has endured a challenging 2024/25 season, scoring just two goals across all competitions, with only one in the Premier League.
