Former Nigerian international Jay-Jay Okocha has expressed his disappointment over never winning the prestigious African Player of the Year award, calling it unfair.
The ex-Paris Saint-Germain star came close on three separate occasions but narrowly missed out each time.
Speaking with Oma Sports, Okocha said he believed he had done enough during his career to deserve the honor, though he has come to terms with the outcome.
“At some point, I genuinely felt I had done enough to win it,” he said. “But in the end, I had to accept it and say maybe that’s just life — you can’t have it all.”
“Maybe it just wasn’t meant to be. But honestly, I felt I deserved to win it at least once. When you look at the list and see some of the players who won it during my time, you’ll probably agree that it was a bit unfair.”
