Gift Monday made a memorable first start for Washington Spirit, scoring the decisive goal in a 1-0 win over Orlando Pride in their NWSL encounter.

The Nigerian forward pounced on a costly mistake by Orlando goalkeeper Anna Moorhouse in the 63rd minute, pressing her aggressively as she received a back pass. Monday stole the ball just a yard from goal and calmly slotted it home.

The 23-year-old was later substituted in the 81st minute, replaced by Chloe Ricketts.

The result ended Orlando Pride’s impressive 22-match unbeaten run at home, which dated back to August 25, 2023.

Washington Spirit remain unbeaten this season, with four wins and one draw from their first five games.

Next up, the Spirit will host East Coast rivals Gotham FC at Audi Field on Saturday.
