The Nigeria Women Football League (NWFL) has fined Heartland Queens Football Club N1 million over an assault on match officials during their Premiership clash against Remo Stars Ladies on April 16, 2025, at the Dan Anyiam Stadium, Owerri.
In a statement released on Friday, April 18, the NWFL strongly condemned the behavior of both club officials and supporters, labeling the incident a grave violation of fair play and respect for match officials.
NWFL Chief Operating Officer, Modupe Shabi, said the disciplinary action followed a thorough review of the match officials’ report and subsequent investigations, which confirmed the misconduct during Match No. 92 of the 2024/2025 NWFL Premiership season.
Quoting Article 26.1 of the league’s regulations, Shabi stated: “Any player or official who assaults a match official or any other person during a match—physically, verbally, through intimidation, or offensive body language—is liable to a fine of N1,000,000.00 and may face possible banishment.”
The league further warned that venues hosting such incidents risk being banned for up to one year.
The NWFL called on Heartland Queens to educate their staff and supporters on the values of fair play and respect for officials, stressing that the penalty serves as a deterrent against future misconduct.
This sanction is part of the NWFL’s ongoing effort to curb violence and uphold discipline within the league, reinforcing its zero-tolerance stance on behavior that threatens the integrity of the sport.
