Newcastle United ended their 70-year wait for a major domestic trophy by defeating Liverpool 2-1 in the Carabao Cup final at Wembley Stadium on Sunday.
The Magpies, seeking their first major title since winning the FA Cup in 1955, overcame the defending champions with goals from Dan Burn and Alexander Isak, while substitute Federico Chiesa netted a late consolation for Liverpool.
Eddie Howe’s side looked determined from the start, while Liverpool struggled to find their rhythm.
The first real chance of the match came in the 24th minute when Sandro Tonali fired just wide from outside the box. Moments later, Jacob Murphy’s dangerous cross was cleared by Ibrahima Konaté before Isak could pounce.
Newcastle nearly broke the deadlock in the 35th minute when Burn connected with a header from Kieran Trippier’s corner, but his effort went straight to the Liverpool goalkeeper. Five minutes later, Liverpool appealed for a penalty after Trippier appeared to handle the ball, but the referee waved play on.
Just before halftime, Burn finally gave Newcastle the lead, heading home from another pinpoint Trippier corner in the 45th minute.
Liverpool had a chance to equalize in first-half stoppage time, but Diogo Jota fired wide from close range.
Newcastle thought they had doubled their lead in the 52nd minute, only for VAR to rule it out. However, just a minute later, Isak made no mistake, volleying home Murphy’s headed pass to put Newcastle 2-0 ahead.
Liverpool nearly responded in the 59th minute, but Curtis Jones’ close-range effort was superbly saved by Newcastle goalkeeper Nick Pope.
Isak had another chance to extend Newcastle’s lead in the 64th minute, but his shot was well saved by the Liverpool keeper.
Tonali tried his luck from distance in the 83rd minute, forcing another save, but Newcastle held firm.
Liverpool grabbed a late goal in the 96th minute when Chiesa fired into the bottom corner after being set up by Harvey Elliott, but it was too little, too late.
Newcastle saw out the final moments to secure a historic victory and lift their first major trophy in seven decades.
