South African Football Association (SAFA) President Danny Jordaan has expressed confidence that the gap between South Africa and Nigeria in women’s football is narrowing.
His remarks came after Nigeria’s U-17 women’s team, the Flamingos, defeated South Africa’s Bantwana 5-1 in the second qualifying round of the U-17 Women’s World Cup.
Jordaan consoled the players and commended the coaching staff for their efforts.
“We sympathize with the players and the entire team after this disappointing result. However, the gap between South Africa and Nigeria is closing. Congratulations to Nigeria for advancing to the next stage,” he said.
“But remember, 2031 is just six years away. We are building a team for the future, and by then, many of our players will be 20 or 21 years old.”
“Today’s experience will be invaluable in the long run,” he added.
“Thank you to the HOD and the team for your determination and commitment. Wishing you all the best.”
