Following the decision to expand the 2026 World Cup to 48 teams, FIFA is now exploring the possibility of increasing the number of participating teams for the 2030 edition.

During a recent FIFA meeting, Uruguayan delegate Ignacio Alonso proposed expanding the tournament to 64 teams. FIFA President Gianni Infantino called the suggestion “interesting” and emphasized the need for further analysis.

The 2030 World Cup is set to take place in Morocco, Spain, and Portugal, with Argentina, Paraguay, and Uruguay—hosts of the inaugural 1930 tournament—scheduled to host three matches.
