The head coach of Nigeria’s Flying Eagles, Aliyu Zubairu, has expressed optimism following Thursday’s group stage draw for the Africa U20 Cup of Nations, set to take place in Cote d’Ivoire from April 26th to May 18th.

The Nigerian team has been drawn into a tough group with African football giants Morocco, Egypt, and South Africa—each with a strong history in youth football on the continent.

Reacting to the draw, Coach Zubairu shared his thoughts: “It’s a very good draw. If you aim to compete at the FIFA World Cup, you shouldn’t fear any opponent. Facing Egypt, Morocco, and South Africa at this stage is a great opportunity.”

He added, “I see this as a blessing.” Zubairu’s comments reflect his belief in the potential of his squad and his determination to challenge them against some of the best in African youth football, fostering their growth and resilience.

Acknowledging the challenge ahead, Coach Zubairu emphasized the importance of mental readiness as the team prepares for these crucial matches. He is focused on instilling confidence in his players, ensuring they approach each opponent with respect and seriousness.

“We need to reject the idea that this is a ‘group of death,’” he said. “In African football, no team is small anymore. The key is proper preparation—any lesser-known nation can cause an upset if they come fully prepared.”
